Now all you have to worry about is maintenance. However, now that you have your retainer, you must still watch out for a couple of things. Namely, you should think about when it may need to be replaced. Your retainer might last anywhere from 5-10 years, but that depends heavily on how well you\u2019ve cared for it. The wide range of years means you can\u2019t bet on your oral appliance lasting for a decade; you have to be vigilant for signs of wear. Here are four things you can look for to know when your retainer should be swapped out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Cracks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Under normal circumstances, your retainer shouldn\u2019t be put through that much wear. However, there are reasons it may start to crack, like rough cleaning or grinding your teeth at night. Once cracks start to form, they won\u2019t be able to properly hold your teeth in position and should be replaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Warping<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you clean your retainer in the dishwasher or with too-hot water, you might put it in your mouth one night and find that it no longer fits. The heat has likely bent it out of shape, and you\u2019ll need to exchange it for a new one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Wear &amp; Tear<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you find that your retainer is looser than it used to be, it may just be a little worn out. No matter how gentle you are, it\u2019s bound to happen sooner or later. A loose retainer won\u2019t be able to apply any pressure, so you should swap it out before your teeth start to drift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Calcium Buildup<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After a while, your retainer may start to take on a thin white sheen. That\u2019s calcium buildup, and there isn\u2019t much you can do to prevent it from accumulating over time. If the buildup starts to bother you, it isn\u2019t really possible to clean it off. You\u2019ll have to switch your retainer out for another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s plenty you can do to extend your retainer\u2019s lifespan, but nothing lasts forever. Needing to swap it out is a normal part of having one. There\u2019s no need to stress too much about it.
