Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Dental insurance forms on smartphone

Dental insurance shares a lot of similarities with standard health insurance, in that you pay a monthly premium, and in exchange, the provider covers all or part of your dental care. The big difference is that dental plans are focused on prevention, so treatments that are designed to stop problems before they start typically receive the most coverage. Insurance can still offset the cost of a filling, crown, or denture, but usually at a lower rate compared to checkups and cleanings.

What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers

Almost any dental procedure you can imagine can be covered by dental insurance, and most plans follow the “100-80-50” model, which looks like this:

  • Preventive treatments are covered 100% (checkups, cleanings, X-rays)
  • Basic restorative treatments are covered 80% (fillings, bonding)
  • Advanced restorative treatments are covered 50% (crowns, dentures, extractions)

Cosmetic procedures like whitening and veneers are typically not covered, but their cost can usually be broken up using third-party financing like CareCredit.
