a dental crown

You have a chipped tooth that needs to be repaired. The damage is severe enough that your dentist recommends a dental crown. Although you know plenty of people who have them, you’ve never received one yourself. What will it be like? A dentist is here to explain what you can expect after receiving a dental crown so that you are better prepared on the day of your procedure.

Is There a Recovery Process After Receiving a Temporary Crown?

An important component of the dental crown placement process is that before you receive your finalized restoration, you must be fitted with a temporary one. It takes time for the permanent crown to be fabricated and returned to the dentist’s office. While waiting, you will wear a temporary that will protect your tooth.

This means that you must be mindful of your smile in between appointments. These restorations are more fragile than permanent crowns, so you’ll need to be careful when eating and engaging in any physical activity.

You’ll also want to:

  • Avoid anything hard or sticky, as this can damage the temporary or cause it to fall out
  • Try not to chew on the side of your mouth with the temporary crown
  • Be careful when brushing and flossing so that you don’t cause the crown to fall off

Once a Permanent Crown is Placed, What Should You Expect?

It is not uncommon for patients with newly placed dental crowns to experience some minor sensitivity as well as tenderness. You will want to rinse gently with salt water for a few days to minimize any swelling or discomfort. This should only be temporary and dissipate within a short period of time.

You will need to make sure that you are diligent with your oral hygiene routine, as any bacteria or harmful particles that reach your vulnerable tooth can cause problems that require more extensive restorative care.

Although dental crowns cannot decay, it is essential that you properly clean around the gumline to minimize any potential risk of gum disease. Your dental crown will have a tight seal, but if you neglect your oral hygiene routine or bite down on anything hard, it can lead to worsening oral health issues that can result in needing a root canal or tooth extraction.

One of the most important steps you can take to ensure the long-term success of your dental crown is to continue seeing your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. This will allow them to review your restoration and ensure it is in good shape.

Life with a dental crown doesn’t have to be difficult. Instead, you can take the appropriate steps to maintain your new teeth and enjoy life with a healthier smile.
